Hey Lykkers! Have you ever felt drawn to a place so magical that you couldn't wait to explore it?
We recently set out to discover the legendary Old Man of Storr on the Isle of Skye, and it was an unforgettable adventure that we can't wait to share with you!
Our hike to the Old Man of Storr was one of the most exciting and awe-inspiring experiences we've had in Scotland. The Old Man is a unique rock formation that towers above the landscape, and the hike leading up to it offers panoramic views of the rugged Scottish highlands and the surrounding coastline.
As we trekked up, the weather was unpredictable, adding a layer of adventure to the climb, with fog and mist rolling over the hills, giving the whole scene a mystical vibe. The hike itself is moderate in difficulty, taking around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your pace, and is open to visitors year-round. There's no entry fee to access the trail, making it an accessible and memorable outdoor experience.
At the top, we were rewarded with an incredible view, and the iconic Old Man rock formation stood out against the misty sky. The landscape around it was a photographer's dream, so we took plenty of shots. If you're planning a visit, bring sturdy footwear, as the terrain can be slippery and uneven, especially after rainfall.
Aside from the Old Man of Storr, Skye offers a wealth of other natural wonders that are perfect for those who love adventure and breathtaking scenery. One of the highlights of our trip was the Fairy Pools, a series of crystal-clear waterfalls and natural pools located near Glen Brittle.
We were able to take a short, easy walk to the pools, where the water was so clear we could see the rocks below. Many visitors take a dip in the pools, though it's quite chilly, so we decided to stick to admiring the beauty around us. The Fairy Pools are free to visit and are a great spot for nature lovers and photographers alike.
Another must-visit spot on the island is the Quiraing, a surreal landscape that feels almost otherworldly. The Quiraing is a landslip that offers stunning vistas, with dramatic cliffs and rolling hills. We took the time to explore the hiking trails here, which provided some of the most scenic views we've ever experienced. The Quiraing can be accessed at any time of day, and like most natural attractions on the island, there's no entry fee.
When visiting the Old Man of Storr and other attractions on the Isle of Skye, finding the right place to stay is essential for a comfortable and convenient experience. We stayed at Portree Hotel, located in the island's main town of Portree, just a short drive from the Old Man of Storr. The hotel offers cozy rooms with lovely views of the harbor, and it's a great base for exploring the island. Prices for a double room start around £100-£130 per night, making it an affordable option for travelers.
For those who prefer a more rustic experience, Skye Backpackers Hostel is a great choice. Located in Portree as well, this budget-friendly option offers dormitory-style rooms and private rooms at prices starting around £30-£50 per night. It's a fantastic place to meet other travelers and share stories about your adventures on Skye.
Before setting off on your own adventure to the Old Man of Storr, here are a few practical tips we found helpful. The trailhead is located just off the A855 road, and there is a parking lot at the base of the hill where you can leave your car. The parking lot is free, but it can get crowded, especially during peak tourist season, so it's a good idea to arrive early.
Also, be prepared for quickly changing weather conditions. Even in the summer, the temperatures can be cool, and rain is common, so pack layers, waterproof gear, and a camera to capture the views. The Old Man of Storr trail is open year-round, but the weather can affect trail conditions, so check forecasts before heading out.
Our visit to the Old Man of Storr was a highlight of our trip to the Isle of Skye. Whether you're an avid hiker, a photography enthusiast, or just someone looking to experience the natural beauty of Scotland, this spot is a must-see. With the stunning views, the unique landscape, and the surrounding attractions, we were left with memories we'll cherish forever.
