Montenegro is renowned for its breathtaking coastline, and one of its most iconic sights is Sveti Stefan beach and the small island it is connected to. This picturesque island is a small peninsula, just off the coast from the lively town of Budva.
What makes it unique is its historical fortress walls surrounding a collection of charming red-tiled buildings. Though the island is now privately owned by a luxury hotel group, it remains an essential part of the Montenegrin landscape, capturing the imagination of visitors worldwide.
Today, the island and the buildings on it are part of an upscale hotel complex. Unfortunately, it is not accessible to the general public unless you are a guest at the hotel itself. Staying at this exclusive location comes at a premium, with prices reportedly reaching €800 per night. However, for those lucky enough to afford the luxury, the island promises an unforgettable stay, offering unrivaled views of the surrounding coastline and intimate access to the serene beaches.
The island is surrounded by two very distinct beaches, each offering a different experience for visitors. To the right of the island, as you look out to sea, lies a private beach. This luxurious section is reserved for guests of the hotel or for those willing to pay a hefty €50 per person to gain access. From a viewing point above, you can catch glimpses of elegantly spaced sun loungers and parasols resting on the golden shingle of the beach. It is a peaceful retreat for a select few, far from the crowded shores of public beaches.
On the other side, to the left of the island, lies the public beach of Sveti Stefan. Unlike the private section, this beach is open to everyone, with no entry fee, aside from a modest hourly parking charge. The public beach offers a more relaxed vibe, yet it still boasts stunning views of the island and the surrounding coastline. The water is just as clear and beautiful as the private side, though the atmosphere here is far more laid-back.
Despite its picturesque location, the public beach at Sveti Stefan can feel a little crowded. While there is no denying the incredible views of the island and the pristine, blue waters, the beach itself does not live up to the level of cleanliness one might expect from a world-renowned location. Unfortunately, we noticed some rubbish and discarded materials along the shore, giving the area an untidy look. The beach was packed, and it was difficult to find a quiet spot to relax amid the hustle and bustle.
However, the clear, warm water made up for the crowded conditions. As with many beaches around Montenegro, the water is incredibly clean and inviting, making it a perfect place to cool off from the summer heat.
While the public beach offers a chance to enjoy the views and the sea, the best experience of Sveti Stefan is likely from the viewpoint above the road that leads along the coastline. Here, you can stop and take photos of the island from a higher perspective, offering a stunning panoramic view of the entire area. The photos you can capture here are unforgettable and will likely be the highlight of your visit.
Overall, while Sveti Stefan is undoubtedly a place worth visiting, the experience of the public beach may leave something to be desired. For those who are able to access the private beach, the luxury and tranquility of the area will surely provide a more memorable visit. However, even if you only visit the public beach or view the island from above, Sveti Stefan remains a spectacular part of Montenegro's natural and architectural beauty.
Whether you visit for the views, the luxury experience, or the stunning beaches, Sveti Stefan is an essential stop on any Montenegro itinerary.
