Rising like a vision from the sea, this UNESCO World Heritage site, with its lush subtropical forests, crystal-clear waters, and towering mountains, offers an unrivaled outdoor experience.

Whether we seek exhilarating challenges or leisurely strolls, the island’s diverse trails have something for everyone.

1. Seven Peaks Walk

Distance: 45 km

Imagine embarking on a five-day journey that showcases the island’s most scenic locations. As we walk alongside expert guides like ecologist Luke Hanson, we uncover the island’s secrets, from stunning vistas at North Head and Mount Eliza to pristine beaches and coral reefs. Along the way, a “water day” lets us trade hiking boots for snorkeling gear or kayaks, ensuring a well-rounded adventure.

2. Mt Eliza

Distance: 600 m

Short but sweet, this climb rewards us with panoramic views of the island’s northern section. The path may be rocky and steep, but the 147-meter summit makes the effort worthwhile. However, from September to March, this trail is closed to protect nesting seabirds, so timing is essential!

3. Mount Gower

Distance: 4.5 km (one way)

For seasoned hikers, Mount Gower offers the ultimate challenge. With its misty summit towering at 875 meters, we feel a profound sense of achievement upon conquering this peak. The guided trek involves steep trails, rope climbs, and breathtaking views of Balls Pyramid and native wildlife. It’s an arduous journey, but the reward is unforgettable.

4. Malabar Hill to Dawsons Point Ridge

Distance: 1.5 km (one way)

Starting with a refreshing swim at Neds Beach, we climb to Malabar Hill’s grassy slopes, reaching 208 meters. The trail offers cliff-side views and peaceful rest stops like Pooles Lookout. After completing the hike, North Bay awaits with its crystal waters for a well-earned dip.

5. Goat House Cave

Distance: 2.1 km (one way)

For those who enjoy a bit of thrill, Goat House Cave offers dramatic views and an adventurous climb. With ropes and exposed paths along Mount Lidgbird, this hike tests our courage but rewards us with unparalleled scenery. Beginning in a serene valley, the hike transitions to challenging heights with stunning vistas.

6. Intermediate Hill

Distance: 1 km

Though smaller than some peaks, Intermediate Hill is no less impressive. The 250-meter ascent rewards us with sweeping ocean views and glimpses of the iconic Balls Pyramid sea stack. We can either return the way we came or extend the challenge by descending via Smoking Tree Ridge.

7. Old Gulch and the Herring Pools

Distance: 300 m + extra for Herring Pools

We start with a peaceful stroll to Old Gulch, a rocky cove perfect for quiet reflection. For the more adventurous, a short journey leads to the enchanting Herring Pools, where coral-lined plunge pools invite us to snorkel and explore. Low tide and calm winds make this trek a must for water lovers.

8. Little Island

Distance: 3 km

At the southern end of the island, Little Island offers a relaxing walk through a forest of banyan trees and kentia palms. The grassy clearing at the trail’s end gives us spectacular views of Mount Lidgbird and Mount Gower. From March to September, we can witness the magical Providence Petrels, responding to local calls and fluttering from the skies.

Each trail on Lord Howe Island is an invitation to connect with nature, challenge ourselves, and savor moments of tranquility. From dramatic peaks to serene coves, we are bound to find an adventure that stays with us forever!
